GRAND SLAMS  1925  -  1984  -  1990

1925 SCOTTISH GRAND SLAM & OPENING OF MURRAYFIELD

 v France 25 - 4

(Inverleith)

v Wales 24 - 14

(Swansea)

v Ireland 14 - 8

(Dublin)

v England 14 - 11

(Murrayfield)

Three wins in each of the 1923 & 1924 seasons heralded the arrival of Scotland as contenders for the championship in the 1925 season. A seven try rout of France including four by Ian Smith the 'Flying Scotsman' at Inverleith got the Scots off to a wonderful start, six more tries followed as Wales were taken apart at Swansea including another 4 by Smith. The Irish were then overcome 14 - 8 in a tough match at Lansdowne Rd. This was Scotland's fourth victory in a row over the men in green, they achieved this with tries by Wallace and MacMyn, a conversion by Drysdale and a drop goal by Waddell.  A first Grand Slam beckoned the Scots as 70,000 spectators, a record crowd for the championship packed into the new Murrayfield ground. The auld enemy, under Wavell Wakefield's captaincy were the dominant force in the 1920s and for most of the match led the men in navy blue, but a drop goal by Herbert Waddell five minutes from time saw Scotland win the match 14 - 11 and achieve their first ever Grand Slam.

v Wales 15 - 9

(Cardiff)

v England 18 - 6

(Murrayfield)

v Ireland 32 - 9

(Dublin)

 v France 21 - 12

(Murrayfield)

1984 was a wonderful year for Scotland after waiting nearly 60 years they recorded their second grand slam. Victory at Cardiff Arms Park started the ball rolling followed by an 18-6 win over the Auld enemy at Murrayfield. Arguably the best display of the season came at Lansdowne Road where the Triple Crown was won, a lead of 22 points by half time saw the Scots cruise to victory. The Grand Slam was won against France, Peter Dods kicked 5 penalty goals and when Jim Calder crashed over from short range at a line out with only three minutes left on the clock there was no come back for the French. Jim Aitken captained each match from the front row and Peter Dods kicked a Scottish championship record of 50 points.

Great Days in Scottish Rugby...................3rd February 1923 -  Wales 8 - Scotland 11

GRACIE'S MATCH - Scottish captain Archie Gracie scored a magnificent try for Scotland which won the game 11 - 8 against Wales at Cardiff. The Harlequins man was carried off triumphantly by the Welsh supporters but the gentle Scotsman was more concerned for a young boy whom he had accidentally kicked as he grounded the ball. A crowd of 40,000 witnessed the Scottish victory.

The official programme - Heavily sellotaped spine, small pen mark on front cover, slight creases & middle page loose,

Great Days in Scottish Rugby...................1st April 1933 - Ireland 6 - Scotland 8

Ireland v Scotland 1933 - Scottish Triple Crown Match & unbeaten season programme

After defeating Wales in Swansea 11-3 on 4th February Scotland were to next play Ireland in Lansdowne Road, Dublin on 25 February but the match was postponed because of a blizzard and eventually played on the 1st April. Meanwhile England had been defeated 3-0 at Murrayfield. Scotland led by the prolific try scorer Ian Smith (24 in 32 matches) in his last season ran out winners 8-6 in the Irish capital to win their 7th Triple Crown. With France excluded from the Championship this was an unbeaten season for Scotland. This is the official programme for this Triple Crown match, it has the official match update insert stuck neatly onto 3rd page. Generally the condition is good,  noted faults are some light soiling to the middle pages which also has the score written in, the spine has a partial split and the staples have rusted. The programme is accompanied by a 12x8" photograph of the Scottish team that faced England that season and a COA guaranteeing that the programme is original as issued at the stadium on the day.

On this day Scotland became the first ever team to defeat a touring Springbok team. The South African's were 16 matches into their first overseas tour, unbeaten up until they came up against Scotland's best. The home team triumphed 6 - 0 at Hampden Park in Glasgow. The Scottish forwards dominated the match on a rain sodden turf and with tries by Macleod and Purves they secured this famous victory.
