92.jpg (28467 bytes) "Playing the Enemy" by John Carlin
This is a gripping account of Nelson Mandela's political masterstroke during South Africa's 1995 Rugby World Cup. With the nation on the brink of civil war, Mandela seized on the sport once reviled by the country's blacks as a symbol of Afrikaner oppression and used it to unite his divided country. Morné du Plessis, the side's manager, urged his almost exclusively white team to learn the "black" national anthem for the tournament. By the time Mandela strode into Ellis Park stadium for the final between South Africa and New Zealand, to unanimous cries from both whites and blacks of "Nelson! Nelson!", This book was made into the film 'Invictus' with Morgan Freeman as Mandela & Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar. A secondhand paperback, as new.

CARDIFF RFC - "Taming the Tourists" - by Alan Evans - SIGNED

How Cardiff Beat the All Blacks, Springboks & Wallabies - Launched to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cardiff’s momentous defeat of the All Blacks on 21 November 1953, ‘Taming the Tourists’ is the epic tale of how one club beat the might of New Zealand, South Africa and Australia over a century—and how the Wallabies lost to the Blue and Blacks six times in a row. The book includes personal recollections of great players including Cliff Morgan, Bleddyn Williams, Gerald Davies, John Scott and Gareth Edwards and raises the uncomfortable issue of whether the much-loved international tours will ever return to the rugby calendar in the professional age. Taming the Tourists includes 16 pages of photos depicting the historic matches and a full statistical record and analysis.

EARLY RUGBY  1780 - 1914

These are the early works published on the sport of Rugby Football. Most contain historical, coaching and instructional information, all have comments relating to the period in which the book was published, these books are a route map on how the game has developed through the ages.

"Athletics & Football" by Montague Shearman - Badminton Library

22-MSAF000-frcv.jpg (382006 bytes) 21-MSAF000-title.jpg (244070 bytes) 20-MSAF000-contents.jpg (159283 bytes) 19-MSAF245.jpg (291727 bytes) 18-MSAF246.jpg (699845 bytes)

First published in 1887, four editions exist of this early history (1887, 1888, 1889 & 1894). The book is split into two parts Athletics (265 pages) and Football (142 pages) this is a very good early history of all forms of football,  Rugby (40 pages), Soccer (30 pages), and includes the different school games, Eton, Harrow, Winchester, as well as mediaeval football. The work also includes chapters on rugby coaching. According the the "Origin of Rugby Football" booklet that named Webb-Ellis as the inventor of rugby this book was incorrect in its conclusion that the game of Rugby started as folk football.

It includes the various games played at the public schools of Rugby, Eton, Harrow, Winchester and the Scottish Schools. Histories of the the formation of the English, Scottish, Irish & Welsh Unions appear in various chapters throughout the book as well as lengthy chapters of rugby at Oxbridge. Other important chapters include overseas tours, international matches & players. The book is superbly illustrated throughout with many photos of teams and individuals, (see list of illustrations). It has illustrated boards, it is very unlikely this book was ever published with a dust wrapper. The book was published in three editions, 1892, 1894 & 1925 Please see below for editions currently available:-

1896 - TWO THREE QUARTERS & OTHER VULGAR FRACTIONS

"A FOOTBALL FANTASY"

by WS Douglas

published by Gay & Bird, London 1896

A previously un-catalogued* fictional tale, the story revolving around football played under 'Rugby rules'. The book opens with a discussion between Digby Harrison and Miss Champion in the grandstand about the placing of the ball and  players being allowed to charge the kicker. The plot then revolves around 'football' throughout the story.

The 186 page book was formerly part of the library of H.M.S Newcastle. The spine has a small part missing to the bottom. The inside cover has a Montevideo, Uruguay, booksellers label and a HMS Newcastle library sticker.

*The book does not appear in either Jenkins Rugby Compendium or McLaren's handbook of Rugby Literature. It is therefore an extremely rare publication relating to rugby football.

1897 - "The Origin of Rugby Football" Report (with appendices) of the sub-committee of the Old Rugbeian Society - appointed in July 1895
In 1887 Montague Shearman's book 'Athletics and Football' suggested that the game of Football played in Rugby School was a direct descendant of 'original football' the type played in towns across England. The Old Rugbeian Society were keen to discredit this opinion and set about to confirm the origin of 'rugby football' as having been invented at Rugby School. This report was commissioned in 1895 and published in 1897. It is without doubt one of the most important, if not THE most important book in the history of Rugby Football, it is one of sports greatest confidence tricks. In naming the William Webb Ellis event as the origin of Rugby Football, the conclusion of this book even though it is blatantly incorrect is still believed by the governing body of the sport today. The report says that Matthew Bloxam named Webb Ellis as the inventor of rugby. The truth however is that Bloxam only mentioned that Webb Ellis initiated the change in one of the rules. This book was published with a soft cover and is in very good condition, the binding is tight and the book complete, the only detected faults are a loss of about 1cm to the top of the spine, one small spot (rusty staple bleed) to the front cover. The book is sold together with a copy of the hardcover signed limited edition book  'Understanding the Origin and Evolution of Sport' - Volume 1 - Rugby Union' by Dai Richards which dedicates three chapters to the report giving an in depth analysis of the contents with additional information relating to the correspondence of the former pupils contained in the report. An extremely rare publication.

Includes the "Rules of the Game", a superbly illustrated front cover, very unlikely a dust jacket was issued with this book. "The Modern Rugby Game " by E Gwyn Nicholls
A book by Welsh captain Gwyn Nicholls published by 'Health & Strength' in 1908, titled "The Modern Rugby Game". Primarily a coaching book Nicholls draws on his personal experiences as a player to highlight the various facets of the game. Includes a detailed description of the scrum tactics that 'stole' the loosehead from the All Blacks. It is very unlikely that this book was published with a dust wrapper. A secondhand hard back book with illustrated covers in pristine condition.

RUGGER RHYMES - by T.H.E. Baillie

RUGGER RHYMES - by T.H.E. Baillie, illustrated by Leo Munro. A nicely illustrated soft back book with illustrations taken from 'The illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News'. The date of publication is unknown, we have found Leo Munro illustrations in the above publication dated 1905.The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News changed it's name to 'Country Life' in 1945 so the date of publication can be assumed to be in the period 1900 - 1945. This is a previously unknown publication which does not appear in the Dave McLaren or John Jenkins rugby bibliographies. It is therefore an extremely rare book. This particular copy has 'review copy' stamped on the title page with a name which looks to be 'Arthur Shipham' written on the front, There are a couple of nicks and tears on the spine. We would scan some of the illustrations but the binding is very tight and damage would occur so please excuse the quality of the photos.
