Hi Ben – please find info below as requested.
A NZ All Blacks jersey believed to have been worn by Fred Newton in the 1905 match with Wales. - After the game Dave Gallaher led his men to the Welsh dressing room and the teams collectively swapped jerseys, Gallaher with Nicholls, Wallace with Llewellyn, etc this jersey was swapped with Welsh player Cliff Pritchard. We can’t be 100% sure of Newton because it is not documented and the family did not keep a record. We know that Gallaher was Pritchard's opposite number so it couldn’t have been him, unless of course he had two jerseys. The quality of this jersey remains fantastic even to this day. In 2013 the jersey was inspected by Robertina Downes of the Massey’s Institute of Design for Industry in Palmerston North. She was responsible for creating 8 exact replicas of the 1905 jersey using the same patterns & materials. Robertina had seen the majority of 1905 All Black jersey’s known to be in existence at the time and she measured it and says that it is the biggest that she’s seen (she did name 7 others that she had seen including Palmerston Nth Museum & Cardiff Rugby Club, Twickenham Museum of Rugby). Therefore I think we can safely attribute the jersey to a forward. As each silver fern is individually embroidered and positioned on the jersey, close inspection of the team line up prior to kick off puts Fred Newton being the most likely candidate with a similarly sized fern in the correct position. This together with his nickname ‘fatty’ (at the time of the match he was 15 stone) makes me 95% certain that this jersey was worn by him in the match. Phil Grant, author of the book ‘The Greatest Game Ever Played, Wales v New Zealand 16 December 1905’ is in agreement with me on this. The jersey is accompanied by one of the 8 replicas made, (see attached photo of Robertina with replica jersey) which we obtained directly from her.
Other All Black jerseys that I would consider selling along with this if the underbidders are interested and an agreement could be reached are as follows
Gus Hart (no 3 wing) 1924/5 Invincibles - Hart was the top try scorer in the British leg of the tour with 20 tries, this jersey is from the match with Llanelli in which he famously ran 60 yards to score a try.
Ron Jarden (no 2 wing) 1953 v Wales at Cardiff
Kevin Briscoe (no 7 scrum half) 1963 v Wales at Cardiff (from the first All Blacks defeat of Wales in Cardiff)
Richie McCaw – (no 7) his 7th cap and first appearance against the Springboks.
