The Return of the Springbok

Hans Christian Anderson couldn't have written a greater fairy tale than this. And what a happy ending, for South Africa that is, Francois Pienaar lifting the cup after receiving it from the Springbok shirted Nelson Mandela. After years in the international wilderness, the Boks were back as the world's number 1 team.

A complete set of South Africa's programmes from the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Starting with the magnificent defeat of 1991 champions Australia through the other pool matches against Canada & Romania, the quarter final victory over Samoa, a classic semi-final win against France and who can forget Joel Stransky's drop goal in extra time to defeat tournament favourites New Zealand. Six programmes in total, all in excellent condition.

1980 Springboks v British Lions No 21 jersey - This item is part of the 'Mike Slemen Collection', England's legendary wing three-quarter, it is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Mike Slemen. Mike played in only the one test and he retained his Lions jersey, he was unable to obtain a Springbok shirt for his collection. Knowing this, Syd Miller brought back this substitutes jersey and gave it to Mike after the tour. We are not sure who it belonged to but we do know that it is a test jersey from this series. This was the last Springbok team to defeat the Lions in a test series. The players that wore number 21 in the series are P Edwards & TMD Cocks, number 21 for the 3rd test is unlisted in the match programme. It is a 42" Maxmore jersey in excellent condition.

1921 SPRINGBOKS RUGBY ORIGINAL PHOTO
A beautiful photo of the 1921 Springboks, the first S African team to tour New Zealand. The photo (which is original by Crown Studios, Wellington)) is mounted, framed and glazed. The mount is printed with the teams details and the players are named. This is very likely to be a photo presented to the South Africans by the New Zealand Rugby Union in appreciation of their tour. There is some water damage to the lower part of the mount otherwise the condition is good. The series between NZ and South Africa was drawn, with both teams winning a match and the final test ending in a draw. A superb piece of sporting memorabilia. Ref:  NW-phastrnz1921 - £295.00

An 8 panel Springbok Invincible ball signed by the Springbok tour party that visited New Zealand in 1956, there are 32 signatures in total. The players that have signed the ball are as follows: J.U.Buchler, S.S.Viviers (capt), K.T. van Vollenhoven, P.G.A Johnstone, R.G.Dryburgh, J.G.H du Preez, T.P.D Briers, W. 1906 Springboks collection

1906 Springboks signed ball. A 'Zug' ball possibly manufactured in South Africa but certainly available for purchase in SA, see the Perrins & Burke, Port Elizabeth advert, where you can buy the 'Zug' for 15 shillings. This advert is dated 1910. The signatures have faded on the ball and written on one of the panels is 1906 Springboks, this can only be seen at a certain angle and light, we can only make out the one autograph which is Stegmann, match balls at this time were normally autographed by both teams who had played in a match. The bladder has been replaced in this ball. This ball is certainly a case for the conservationist. The photo of a signed ball is one of the 1906 tourists that was illustrated in Piggot's book of the tour, see below, item number 5. (WRM-0357)
