England tour of Canada 1993 Blazer - A blazer by Alexandre of England, the blazer crest is embroidered directly onto the pocket, two Maple leaves underneath the Rose indicate the tour of Canada. Mike was a coach on this tour. During the tour Martin Johnson was called up for his first Lions (1993 Lions) tour. Mike related to me how Johnson found out about his call up for the tour................................. "we were told in the evening that Martin had been called up for the Lions tour, we searched high and low and couldn't find him anywhere. The next morning at the 'tour court' session we tried Johnson along with all the other transgressors. We deliberately made him wait and wait and wait and eventually we tried him for desertion. Peter Rossborough was prosecuting and he still didn't know he was going to be a British Lion. Anyway he was tried and found guilty of desertion, and the punishment banishment to New Zealand with the Lions, you should have seen his face !!! |
| The 1907-8 season saw the
Cornishmen off to a shaky start in the pool section of the County
Championship when they were defeated by Devon, but an away win
against Gloucestershire forced a 3 way play-off between Cornwall,
Devon & Gloucestershire. The Cornish side stormed through the
play-offs thrashing Devon 21 - 3 and beating Gloucestershire at
Kingsholm 15 - 3 to set up a semi-final showdown with Middlesex. The
Londoners were defeated 19 - 3. In front of 17,000 at Redruth,
Durham were then defeated 17 - 3 and Cornwall became the champions
of England. The champion county were then selected to represent
England/Britain in the 1908 Olympics. Only two teams had entered the
rugby tournament at the Olympics and the Cornishmen faced the
touring Wallabies to battle for the Olympic crown. The Wallabies
were victorious by 32 points to 3 and Cornwall were awarded the
silver medal.
