The 1907-8 season saw the Cornishmen off to a shaky start in the pool section of the County Championship when they were defeated by Devon, but an away win against Gloucestershire forced a 3 way play-off between Cornwall, Devon & Gloucestershire. The Cornish side stormed through the play-offs thrashing Devon 21 - 3 and beating Gloucestershire at Kingsholm 15 - 3 to set up a semi-final showdown with Middlesex. The Londoners were defeated 19 - 3. In front of 17,000 at Redruth, Durham were then defeated 17 - 3 and Cornwall became the champions of England. The champion county were then selected to represent England/Britain in the 1908 Olympics. Only two teams had entered the rugby tournament at the Olympics and the Cornishmen faced the touring Wallabies to battle for the Olympic crown.
