Rugby Relics are delighted to be able to offer part of the extensive rugby memorabilia collection of a Welsh gentleman. This is one of the finest collections we have seen and has been put together over the last 25 years. No expense has been spared by this collector who has scoured the world for 'rugby gems'. Although a 'die hard' fan of Wales and all things connected with Welsh rugby, the collection has a genuine worldwide flavour and includes several game worn & signed jerseys from all the major playing countries, a great selection of books, many programmes, badges and groggs, plus an assortment of photographs, menu cards, tickets, ties, plates, itinerary cards, first day covers, postcards etc. Many items amongst the collection are autographed by the rugby playing elite. Being well travelled and well connected has meant that there are some extremely rare and much sought after items in this collection. TWO THREE QUARTERS & OTHER VULGAR FRACTIONS

"A FOOTBALL FANTASY"

by WS Douglas

published by Gay & Bird, London 1896

A previously un-catalogued* fictional tale, the story revolving around football played under 'Rugby rules'. The book opens with a discussion between Digby Harrison and Miss Champion in the grandstand about the placing of the ball and  players being allowed to charge the kicker. The plot then revolves around 'football' throughout the story.

The 186 page book was formerly part of the library of H.M.S Newcastle. The spine has a small part missing to the bottom. The inside cover has a Montevideo, Uruguay, booksellers label and a HMS Newcastle library sticker.

PROGRAMMES

CARDIFF v SOUTH AFRICA - 1st JANUARY 1907

This was the 28th match of the first ever Springbok tour. The Springboks record was an enviable 25 wins, one match drawn with a single narrow loss against Scotland. Earlier in the tour they had soundly beaten Wales 11 - 0 at Swansea. The match against Cardiff was their last match in Britain before ending the tour in France.

The Springboks were much fancied to maintain their unbeaten record in Wales but a combination of a boggy field and a Cardiff team on top of their form saw the Springboks thrashed at Cardiff Arms Park. Ankle deep in mud the Springbok forwards were unable to match their Welsh opponents in the tussle up front. Cardiff had given the All Blacks a fright a year earlier when they were the only team to score two tries against them. Their 10 - 8 loss to the men of New Zealand was their only defeat in a wonderful season. Led by the genius of Percy Bush the home team included one of the greatest centre partnerships of all time in Gwyn Nicholls and Rhys Gabe, the latter having lined up for Llanelly against the Springboks only 3 days previous.

Nicholls it was who opened up the scoring with a marvellous try converted by his brother-in-law Bert Winfield. Gibbs then scored a try for the home team, Winfield missed the conversion but landed a penalty goal late in the half. An early incident saw both Biggs (Cardiff) and Millar (Springboks) leave the field, both returned but Biggs retired from the game at half time. Despite playing the second period with only 14 men against the wind the Cardiff men were able to hold the tourists and prevent them from scoring. They added two further tries through Williams and Gabe to win by an astonishing 17 point margin.

Time has relegated this match to the history books but surely this was Cardiff's greatest victory ever !
