The Barbarians are a rugby club which brings together players from different clubs and countries to play a few matches each year. The club is renowned for it's attacking & adventurous style of rugby. Entertainment and enjoyment are top of the agenda, fast flowing attractive rugby without the pressure of having to win. The Barbarians or Baa-Baas as they are popularly known have played in over 25 countries and the players can hail from any club or country. The only criteria for a player to receive an invitation to become a Barbarian is that they play a good standard of rugby and their conduct both on and off the field is exemplary. Founded in 1890 by W Percy Carpmael the club toured regularly throughout Britain playing against club and provincial sides. In 1948 a fixture was arranged with the touring Wallabies to raise funds for the visitors to travel home via Canada. The end of tour match then became a permanent fixture for the major touring sides to the British Isles. Some of the greatest games ever have included the Barbarians, a capacity crowd witnessed the match against South Afrrica in 1961 where the tourists were unbeaten until they met a determined Barbarian XV and who can forget Gareth Edwards try in probably the greatest match ever as the Barbarians defeated Ian Kirkpatrick's All Blacks. The Barbarians are a team that all rugby fans can identify with, no matter which club or country they follow.

THE GREAT GAME AND THAT FAMOUS TRY

Barbarians 23 - New Zealand 11, 27th January 1973, a game that will live in the minds of many as the greatest rugby match there ever was. Myself included ! At the age of 12 we were late getting into the ground, we had South Enclosure tickets and being quite small we managed to squeeze our way onto the steps coming down from the South Stand. This was my first visit to the Arms Park and I couldn't believe how jam packed the actual stadium was. The game had already started so we settled ourselves down on the steps, I looked up to see the All Blacks kick ahead and Phil Bennett pick up the ball in his own 25, he started sidestepping All Blacks and the rest is history, with Edwards scoring in the corner right under our noses. Watching a playback of that try still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, even after about the 200th + time, this happens at the same point every time, just before Bryan Williams kicks the ball. If you shut your eyes at this point and listen not to Cliff Morgan but only to the crowd, you get the feeling of what it was like to be there, turn up the volume to full at this point and hear the general crowd noise, then on Benny beating two players, you have the first roar, then 5 different higher levels of 'roaring' ending with Edwards in the corner. An incredible thing to witness, something I'll never forget.

above - Tom David about to offload to Quinnell

Cliff Morgan's commentary of the 'try'

'This is great stuff... Phil Bennett covering ..……ch ch chased by Alistair Scown... brilliant... Ooooh, that’s brilliant! John Williams, Bryan Williams ...Pullin, John Dawes ...Great dummy! ...David, T Tom David ...the half way line ...Brilliant by Quinnell!  This is Gareth Edwards! ...A dramatic start! ...what a score!

Video clip courtesy of the BBC

But this try was not the only highlight of the game, what was nearly the second greatest try but for a forward pass would have been scored by John Dawes. In a move started by JPR Williams, a quick switch with David Duckham who's run is one of the most breathtaking ever seen, in this run he executed a sidestep and a simultaneous dummy followed by a change of pace that left the New Zealanders wide eyed in astonishment. The move includes a deft chip for the corner by Derek Quinnell which was charged down into the hands of a grateful Gareth Edwards, the move ended with John Dawes catching the ball with his fingertips and falling over the line and in the words of Cliff Morgan "brilliant......but.... but....but.... it was forward"

BARBARIANS v ALL BLACKS 1973 (DVD)

On a grey January afternoon in Cardiff, few expected the Baa -Baas to offer much resistance to a rampant New Zealand side. The All Blacks went into their final tour match having recorded victories over Wales, Scotland and England: the Barbarians, as is their tradition, had limited preparation, an uncapped player and an obligation to attack. However, the Barbarians' side was comprised of many of the truly great players of the era - Duckham, Gibson, JPR Williams, Bennett, Edwards, McBride and Carmichael - and together they were to produce a truly remarkable team performance, including a try from Gareth Edwards in the third minute which has proved, with the passage of time, to have been one of the best in the history of the game. Soon, the All Blacks, with outstanding players like Going, Batty and Williams, began to match their opponents' exhilarating quality. As attack and counter-attack brought a fantastic response from the Arms Park, the stage was set for the greatest rugby match ever seen. Special Features: Commentary with Phil Bennett, David Duckham and Gareth Edwards. Running Time: 98 mins, Classification; E
