76.jpg (145455 bytes) Coney Beach, Porthcawl 29th August 1960. One of the most infamous nights of Welsh boxing. this fight has a special place in boxing folklore, primarily because of the explosive scenes which followed it. When London retired in his corner at the end of the eighth round, his father and brother, both named Jack, were incensed by the rough tactics Richardson had employed and climbed into the ring to protest. A full-scale brawl broke out, which ended with London being fined by the British Boxing Board of Control. Richardson, generally considered to have caused the cut which ended the fight by using his head, remained on his stool shielded by cornermen until the violence had subsided. The programme features the following bouts - Heavyweight Championship of Europe - Dick Richardson v Brian London, Welterweight Contest of European Importance - Brian Curvis v Chris Christensen, Featherweight - Harry Carroll (Cardiff) v Andy Hayford (Ghana), Welterweight - Tanos Lambrianides (Greece) v Jimmy Lawson ( Middlesborough), Featherweight - Brian Smith ( Porthcawl) v Peter Delbridge (Pyle) and Other Contests. 95.jpg (104203 bytes) Earls Court Arena, London, 7th September 1965. Vincente Saldivar v Howard Winstone. Neil Allen of boxing monthly comments on this fight "The 15 rounds at Earl's Court was a classic jousting tournament, with Winstone's rapier being outscored by the mace of Saldivar. At ringside, I made the Mexican champion win nine of the 15 rounds, with one even, and gave the other five to Winstone, who was most in command in the first four rounds but came back heroically in the 11th, 12th and 15th. Winstone had trouble for much of the bout with Saldivar's southpaw stance, but I will never forget his final ferocious drive in the last round, as if the ghosts of all the men, who suffered and died in Merthyr's old mines were now behind him." Other bouts on the card include Freddie Mack (USA) v Jack Bodell (Swadlincote), Carl Gizzi (Wales) v Dave Ould (Bermondsey), Billy Marlow (Cardiff) v Johnny Whitecross (Glasgow). The programme has a slight crease and some scoring on the centre pages.
